Activities and links to teach letters and sounds in all kinds of fun ways!
Information provided on this page is for classroom use only; not for publication. thevirtualvine.com 2007 |
Aaaaaaapple Sorting Mat: Download this /a/ sorting mat, print on cardstock and laminate. Have students sort pictures that begin with the /a/ sound onto the mat. If needed, beginning sounds cards can be found on the Literacy Connections page (they go with Mr. Munchy Mouth!).
Letter A Discrimination: Give students a pile of magnetic letters and let them sort the Aa's onto the apple mat above. The next time to change it up, give them a pile of those plastic letter tiles from WalMart. (For young children, you might want to line up a few letters for them to choose from to help with letter discrimination and directionality.) Then if appropriate, follow up with these paper/pencil activities that cover writing their name, /a/ sound, position word "below", discrimination of letter Aa, color identification, writing Aa, and following directions!
(Because everyone uses different kinds of fonts in their classroom, I chose not to add Aa to the printing line on this page. I would suggest that you add them by hand using a fine-tipped Sharpie marker before copying for your class.)
Letter A Counting: Because I try and incorporate skills across the curriculum, I created these sheets that tie in both language arts and math.

Letter Match: This is a paper/pencil follow-up activity for the hands-on activity on the M&Ms page (see link above). Our Ks are required to complete paper/pencil 9 wk assessments, so this is something they have to be able to do. I'm providing different variations, for different needs.
Letter Discrimination: Print this sheet that covers writing their name, /m/ sound, position word "below", discrimination of letter Mm, color identification, writing Mm, "big", and following directions!
(Because everyone uses different kinds of fonts in their classroom, I chose not to add Mm to the printing line on this page. I would suggest that you add them by hand using a fine-tipped Sharpie marker before copying for your class.)
Sorting Mat: Print this mat onto cardstock, laminate and cut out. Have student sort picture cards onto the mat that begin with /m/. If needed, picture cards can be found on the Literacy Connections page with Mr. Munchy Mouth.
Alphabet Matching: Print the alphabet M&Ms on cardstock, laminate and cut out. Have students match the capital letter to the lowercase by clipping them together front to back with a clothespin. This activity will be great for both letter identification and strengthening fine motor grips. Or, you could put velcro dots on the back of the M&Ms instead.
Mmmm ... Game: Download and print these game cards onto cardstock. Laminate. Cut out M&Ms. If the picture begins with /m/, students cover it with an M&M with an “m”. If it doesn’t begin with /m/, they cover it with an M&M without an “m”. If you prefer, you can not print the M&M cards and use real M&Ms instead. (This is another large file .. so make sure you get it now in case I have to remove it later! It can't be emailed!!!)

Letter Recognition: Print this page for students to practice Letter R recognition. Circle the letters using a rrrrrrred crayon. :) After their paper has been checked for accuracy, they can color their rrrrrrainbow.
Letter R Rainbow: This rainbow was created to reinforce the /r/ sound. The student was given a page of pictures and only those that began with /r/ were to be glued on the raindrops. (The pictures were from an old phonics worksheet that had been reduced in size on the copy machine.) So you've got a rrrrrainbow with rrrraindrops dripping with all these rrrrr pictures! :)
The rainbow itself is one that I drew off on a paperplate, clouds included. Then I painted a model for her to go by and explained how to stay in the lines. Once it was dry, she added the clouds which are cottonballs pulled apart and glued on. The raindrops were cut using the Ellison machine. It has 3 sizes on a die and I think this is the largest size. I added the strands of icicle material with scotch tape because that was easier than trying to use glue and waiting on it to dry. This is a multi-step project and does take a while, so we did this rainbow one day and the raindrops the next.
ABC Match: Print on cardstock and laminate for students to practice matching capital to lowercase letters ... or use as flashcards.

Letter Discrimination: Print these sheets that cover writing their name, /s/ sound, discrimination of letter Ss, color identification, writing Ss, "big" & "little" or "capital" & "lowercase", and following directions!
(Because everyone uses different kinds of fonts in their classroom, I chose not to add Ss to the printing line on this page. I would suggest that you add them by hand using a fine-tipped Sharpie marker before copying for your class.)
S song: Sing this song to practice writing the letter S and saying it's sound. This song was written as part of my Sock Unit, so you can omit the part about the socks if you'd like. :)
S Song (Tune: The Mulberry Bush)
This is the way we put on our socks, (pretend to put on socks) put on our socks, put on our socks, (pretend to put on socks) This is the way we put on our socks, (pretend to put on socks) So late in the afternoon.
This is the way we make the S sound, /s/, /s/, /s/, /s/, /s/, /s/, /s/, /s/ This is the way we make the S sound, So late in the afternoon.
This is the way we write the letter S, write the letter S, write the letter S. This is the way we write the letter S, So late in the afternoon. (either air write the letter S or use individual whiteboards) ~ Cindy Montgomery ~
Sock Alphabet: Print the alphabet cards on cardstock, laminate, and have students match the capital to lowercase letters.
