First Grade - Reading

Demonstrates an awareness of books, print and reading process

- identifies where the reader would begin and end; points to a letter and a word

- demonstrates knowledge of concept of word boundaries and letters

Uses language to establish a connection and interact with print

- experiences/engages in retelling stories (brings personal experiences to stories)

- follows oral directions

- processes language presented orally in stories and discussion

- expresses self through drawing/writing

-demonstrates that reading is a process of gaining meaning

Reads orally with fluency based on rate, intonation, phrasing, and naturalness utilizing miscues

- recognizes many sight words (high frequency, instruction connecting)

- attempts to use all cues available (e.g., syntax, context, language predictability), when reading

Extends phonemic awareness

- pronounces all sounds in words containing two or three phonemes

- blends sounds in words containing initial and final blends

Uses letter-sound (grapheme/phoneme) relationships to identify words in context

- recognizes letter-sound associations

- recognizes word families and rhyming words

- identifies new words by picture cues

- identifies likeness and differences in words and letters

- knows how to make new words

- decodes words using phonemes

Derives meaning from text and extends meaning beyond the print

- attends to a story read aloud

- retells a story with elaboration and with meaningful sequence

- recognizes fact from fantasy

- makes predictions

- utilizes picture/context cues

Develops listening skills

- follows directions

- listens attentively with understanding to a story

First Grade - Writing

Exhibits developmentally appropriate oral language for communication purposes

- retells a personal story

- responds to questions in conversation using words and phrases in the primary language

- participates in conversation while interacting with peers

- sequences in proper order

- recalls sequence of events

- uses positional words

- speaks in sentences

Demonstrates an awareness of print in written language

- writes from left to right on page; top to bottom direction

- writes words using correct spacing

- writes simple complete sentences using correct subject/verb sentence patterns

- writes a statement sentence

- recognizes a question sentence

*sentence patterns refer to the structure of a sentence and denotes usage not the labeling of parts of speech or functions

Uses written language to establish a connection and to interact with print

- writes personal experiences to retell a story

- expresses self through drawing/writing

- writes to retell a story read or presented orally

Identifies and writes words in context using letter/sound relationships (graphophonic/phonemic) and basic sight words

- writes words using letter/sound relationships

- spells frequently used sight words correctly

Demonstrates the writing process

- pre-writes to organize ideas

- creates a draft using pre-writing activities

- revises draft to improve content of draft

- edits for errors

- publishes selected final work

Writes for a purpose

- expresses self through drawing/writing

- writes for a specific audience

First Grade - Math

Discovers, creates, extends, and describes patterns and other relationships

- identifies, represents, extends, explains, and describes patterns

- creates, extends, and records patterns using a wide variety of materials and procedures including the number patterns 2s, 5s, and 10s

- explores and explains patterns of addition and subtraction with and without the use of a calculator

- explores patterns using a hundreds chart

Collects, organizes, and interprets data using tables, charts, and graphs

- collects data, models, and constructs graphs using real objects

- gathers data, constructs, and interprets bar and pictorial graphs

- makes a prediction, collects data, and compares results

- explores and discusses "always," "maybe," "sometimes," and "never" events

Uses a variety of tools and techniques to make comparisons and to develop an awareness of measurement

- uses nonstandard and standard units to explore length

- compares weights of objects

- explores and estimates capacity of various containers in nonstandard units

- places correctly numbers on an analog clock

- recognizes the hour-hand and minute-hand and simulates clockwise motion

- tells time to hour, half hour intervals, and explores time to five-minute intervals

- explores concepts of hot and cold using a thermometer

- reads a calendar by naming months of the year and finding a particular date

Recognizes basic characteristics, shapes, and properties of two and three dimensional geometric figures

- recognizes open and closed figures

- recognizes and identifies two-dimensional figures including triangle, square, rectangle, circle

- classifies two and three-dimensional figures according to characteristics (e.g., square, rectangle, circle, cube, prism, sphere, cone, and cylinder)

- identifies congruent shapes and similarity of two geometric figures

- identifies symmetrical objects and their lines of symmetry

- models, names, and follows directions using positional words (e.g., over, under, beside, in front of, inside, outside)

- uses multimedia resources to explore patterns, symmetry, and shapes

Models and applies the basic operations of addition and subtraction

- explores and explains patterns of addition and subtraction with and without the use of a calculator

- uses manipulatives to explore different combinations of whole numbers, and writes the equations that accompany them

- explores different concepts of addition and subtraction, and writes equations that accompany them

- demonstrates that addition and subtraction are inverse operations

- computes basic facts 0 to 10 for addition and subtraction with and without manipulatives
